Overview

This reference guide provides critical file system locations for Adobe applications on both Windows and macOS. Use these paths when troubleshooting installation issues, resetting preferences, clearing cache, investigating plugin problems, or reviewing error logs[1][2][3]. All paths assume standard installation locations — custom installations may vary.

User Preferences and Settings

User Preferences and Settings

Purpose: Reset corrupted preferences, investigate user-specific configuration issues, copy settings between machines[4][5].

Note for macOS: The user Library folder is hidden by default. Press Option + Go in Finder, then select Library to access it[6].

Plugins and Extensions

Plugins and Extensions

Purpose: Troubleshoot plugin conflicts, verify plugin installation, manually install or remove third-party plugins[7][8].

Windows

  • Photoshop version-specific: C:\ Program Files\ Adobe\ Adobe Photoshop [version]\ Plug-ins
  • Photoshop shared CC location: C:\ Program Files\ Common Files\ Adobe\ Plug-Ins\ CC
  • Camera Raw (shared): C:\ Program Files\ Common Files\ Adobe\ Plug-Ins\ CC\ File Formats
  • Acrobat plugins: C:\ Program Files\ Adobe\ Acrobat [version]\ Acrobat\ plug_ins

macOS

  • Photoshop version-specific: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Plug-ins
  • Photoshop version-specific: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Plug-ins
  • Camera Raw (shared): /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CC/File Formats
  • Acrobat plugins: /Applications/Adobe Acrobat [version]/Adobe Acrobat.app/Contents/Plug-ins

Important: Plugins installed in the shared CC location are available to all compatible Creative Cloud apps. Plugins in the version-specific folder only work with that specific application version[7].

Cache and Temporary Files

Cache and Temporary Files

Purpose: Clear cache to free disk space, resolve sync issues, fix corrupted temporary data causing instability[9][10].

Windows

Table 5: Adobe cache locations on Windows
Cache Type Location
Creative Cloud cache C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Local\ Adobe\ OOBE
Media Cache (Premiere/AE) C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Roaming\ Adobe\ Common\ Media Cache Files
Photoshop temp files C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Local\ Temp
Bridge cache C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Roaming\ Adobe\ Bridge [version]\ Cache

macOS

Table 6: Adobe cache locations on macOS
Cache Type Location
Creative Cloud cache ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE
Media Cache (Premiere/AE) ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Media Cache Files
Photoshop temp files ~/Library/Caches/com.adobe.Photoshop
Bridge cache ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/Bridge [version]/Cache

Warning: Close all Adobe applications before deleting cache files to prevent data corruption[9].

Log Files for Troubleshooting

Log Files for Troubleshooting

Purpose: Review installation errors, diagnose app crashes, collect diagnostic information for Adobe Support[11][12].

Windows

Table 7: Adobe log file locations on Windows
Log Type Location
Creative Cloud installer logs C:\ Program Files (x86)\ Common Files\ Adobe\ Installers
Creative Cloud PDApp.log C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Local\ Temp
Download logs (dlm.log) C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Local\ Temp\ AdobeDownload
ACC.log (CC Desktop) C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Local\ Temp
Adobe Setup Error.log C:\ Program Files (x86)\ Common Files\ Adobe\ Installer

macOS

Table 8: Adobe log file locations on macOS
Log Type Location
Creative Cloud installer logs ~/Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers
Creative Cloud PDApp.log ~/Library/Logs
Download logs (dlm.log) ~/Library/Logs/AdobeDownload
ACC.log (CC Desktop) ~/Library/Logs
Adobe Setup Error.log ~/Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers

How to review logs:

  1. Open the log file in a text editor (Notepad on Windows, TextEdit on macOS)
  2. Search for ERROR or FATAL (all caps, case-sensitive) to jump to error messages[11]
  3. Work backwards from the bottom of the file to find the most recent errors
Registry Locations (Windows Only)

Registry Locations (Windows Only)

Purpose: Set enterprise policies, lock preferences, troubleshoot licensing issues[13].

  • Current user settings: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Adobe\ [Product Name]\ [Version]
  • Machine-level settings: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Adobe\ [Product Name]\ [Version]
  • Feature lockdown (32-bit): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Policies\ Adobe\ [Product]\ [Version]\ FeatureLockDown
  • Feature lockdown (64-bit): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Wow6432Node\ Adobe\ [Product]\ [Version]\ FeatureLockdown

Warning: Editing the registry incorrectly can cause system instability. Always back up the registry before making changes. For Acrobat, version is typically "DC" for Continuous track or a year like "2024" for Classic track[13].

Common Tier 1 Troubleshooting Tasks

Common Tier 1 Troubleshooting Tasks

Task 1: Reset Application Preferences

When to use: User reports corrupted preferences, unexpected behavior, UI elements missing or misplaced.

Windows (Acrobat example):

  1. Close Acrobat completely
  2. Navigate to C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Roaming\ Adobe\ Acrobat\ [version]
  3. Rename the Preferences folder to Preferences.old
  4. Relaunch Acrobat — it will create a fresh Preferences folder

macOS (Acrobat example):

  1. Quit Acrobat
  2. Navigate to ̃/Library/Preferences/
  3. Delete com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist
  4. Relaunch Acrobat

Task 2: Reset Application Preferences

When to use: Sync issues, CC Desktop app consuming excessive disk space, installation problems.

Windows:

  1. Close Creative Cloud Desktop app completely (check system tray)
  2. Navigate to C:\ Users\ [username]\ AppData\ Local\ Adobe\ OOBE
  3. Delete all files and folders inside the OOBE directory
  4. Restart Creative Cloud Desktop app[9]

macOS:

  1. Quit Creative Cloud Desktop app (check menu bar)
  2. Navigate to  ̃/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE
  3. Delete all files and folders inside the OOBE directory
  4. Restart Creative Cloud Desktop app[9]

Task 3: Verify Plugin Installation

When to use: User reports plugin not appearing in application, third-party tools not loading.

  1. Check the version-specific plugin folder first
  2. Check the shared CC plugin folder second
  3. Verify the plugin file has the correct extension (.8bf, .8bx, .plugin, etc.)
  4. Ensure plugin is compatible with the installed application version[7]
  5. Restart the application after manually adding plugins

Task 4: Collect Logs for Escalation

When to use: Installation failure, repeated crashes, licensing issues requiring Adobe Support involvement.

Option 1: Manual collection

  1. Navigate to installer logs location (see Log Files section above)
  2. Locate the most recent log file matching the problem date/time
  3. Copy log file to desktop for attachment to ticket[11]

Option 2: Adobe Log Collector Tool (recommended)

  1.  Download from Adobe Help Center: Adobe Log Collector
  2. Run the tool — it automatically collects all relevant logs
  3. Tool creates a compressed archive on desktop
  4. Attach archive to escalation ticket[12]
