Migration Steps

 

  1. Identify the Department that is migrating
  2. Identify and make contact with all IT personnel in that department
    1. Identify a specific person as the department IT POC. Use this person for all communications.
  3. Identify all IT resources in the department
    1. Make sure when gathering data to include the below at minimum for each IT resource:
      1. Administrator POC
      2. Owner POC
      3. VLAN Information:
        1. VLAN #
        2. VLAN Name
        3. Palo or ASA
  4. Identify hardware warranties
  5. Identify software support through vendors. If more than one list all.
  6. Submit for access to VLANs via firewall.pitt.edu
    1. Submit rules for:
      1. PING
      2. Remote access
      3. Web access
      4. Database access
      5. Additional non-standard ports
  7. Add HSIT server Team members to all IT resources (SVC OU ADMINS)
  8. Analyze all IT resources and their needs and focus on the below:
    1. OS version and supportability - is the OS current or will it expire soon: NOTE this is top priority
    2. Identify Database information
      1. For each server:
        1. Database server type (i.e. MQSQL, MariaDB, Mongo, Oracle etc...)
        2. Database names and sizes - How many what are their names
        3. Is there any jobs/tasks to each database
        4. Is there any backup processes for the databases
        5. How many and what accounts are used
    3. Windows Server information
      1. For each server:
        1. What OS is being used
          1. Windows Version
          2. Linux Flavor/version
        2. What is the purpose of the server
        3. Does it have multiple IP's
        4. Does it have multiple SSL certificates
        5. Does it have multiple websites/applications - are their different POCs for each site/application? who are they?
        6. What databases does it use
        7. Are the servers configured to use Splunk
        8. Is the server physical or VM and where is it located
        9. How are Windows Updates handled
        10. Are there any file shares on the server
    4. Security of resource (identify last known security scan).
    5. Consolidation possibilities
  9. Identify immediate action items - any outdated OS or software must be priority!
  10. Identify and plan action that require research and fact finding - focus on the below areas:
    1. Database systems
    2. File Storage
    3. Web Applications
    4. Specialized resources
  11. Begin process of planning IT resources following HS policy guidance
  12. Migrate IT resources
