Dell OpenManage Essentials ver. 2.5

The Dell Open Manage Essentials software is a FREE utility provided by Dell for the management of Dell Hardware platforms. The software is a web based IIS platform communicating to either an internal (SQL Express) or external SQL Server Database. The software communicates to each client (server) and sends data about the platforms performance, hardware status, and functionality. It can be used to update the hardware components to maintain a current status of Drivers, Firmware, ESM Firmware, BIOS, and Applications. This order is used when installing/updating the clients. Ensure if you do updates manually that you follow this order.
To access the Web Console use the below link:

https://dellome.hs.pitt.edu - This is the new Appliance

*** NOTE - If you are setting up a new OME instance and plan to use a local database on SQL Express then login using the account that will manage OME i.e. Pitt\openmrg. This is important because when you attempt to create the database during the install other accounts will be unable because they don't have the DB creator rights. Only the account that initiated the install has those rights at the moment.

Use Pitt\openmrg Pitt account to login.

Normal steps for installing OMSA/Dell Essentials on a server:

  1. Install new server with 2012 R2 and update until current
  2. Request FQDN for the server
  3. After the system is installed, up to date, and DNS entry is valid, install the SNMP service on the server ensure to select SNMP, SNMP WMI Provider and Telnet client features from the roles and features window.
  4. You would probably want to reboot.
  5. Configure SNMP Service (set to automatic)
  6. Apply the registry settings from: \\univ.pitt.edu\svc\NetAdmin\Software_admin\Dell Open Manage Essentials\OME Version 2.5\OME Reg.reg
  7. Apply this registry file to all physical servers: \\univ.pitt.edu\svc\NetAdmin\Software_admin\Dell Open Manage Essentials\Servers\Dell Open Manage Essential Clients SNMP itargetservers.reg
  8. Next apply the App Manager RPC registry file to ensure communication on ports 5000-5500 \\univ.pitt.edu\svc\NetAdmin\Software_admin\registry stuff\AppMgr RPC ports registry\RPC_AppMgr_port_range.reg
  9. Now we can install the OMSA software ver. 9.5.0 on the server. Depending on 32bit or 64bit use the appropriate client. \\univ.pitt.edu\svc\NetAdmin\Software_admin\Dell Open Manage Essentials\Servers\64Bit\

Each Client must have the following installed for proper communications:
Open Manage System Administrator (OMSA) ver. 9.5.0 (current)

So how does OME work?
OME runs the communications by sending SNMP requests to the clients when the client receives the SNMP request it is directed to the OMSA software and the data within the OSMA software is returned to the OME server. The OME software now sends the results of the request to the Database for storage, viewing, and reporting details.
What does OME do for us?
The OME software provides technicians the ability to update all hardware components with any form of patching. It can provide reports for management purposes. A technician can create a support request to Dell directly form the software. All updating functions can be automated. It can notify management/technicians of warranty related information. It can send E-mails notifying technicians of important related details about the clients.
