Overview
This student-focused FAQ explains MyResNet—the high-speed Wi-Fi service in University of Pittsburgh residence halls powered by Boldyn Networks—including how to set up your account, choose the right SSID (5G/6G/2G), register up to 12 devices, and use your personal area network. It also covers common troubleshooting steps, security best practices, and where to get 24/7 help, with direct links to relevant Pitt IT Knowledge Base articles.
Detail
- What is MyResNet and who can use it? MyResNet is Pitt’s free high-speed Wi-Fi network for students in campus residence halls and University-owned housing. It uses the latest Wi-Fi 6/6E technology and provides each student with a dedicated connection. You can register up to 12 devices (e.g. laptop, phone, printer, game console) per student.
- How do I create a MyResNet account? Visit the MyResNet portal (Boldyn Networks) and click Sign In. Log in using your Pitt Passport (University Computing) credentials and Duo authentication. Accept the terms on the portal, then the system will display a default Wi-Fi password. Copy that default password and immediately change it to a unique password (different from your Pitt login). (You’ll also receive a confirmation email from support.hed@boldyn.com when your account is set up.)
- When should I sign up? It’s recommended to create your MyResNet account before arriving on campus. Once the account is set up, your devices can automatically join the network. To register on campus, you may briefly connect to “MyResNet Start Here” (a slow SSID used only for setup) and forget it afterward.
- What information do I use to sign in? Use your Pitt Passport username and password (with Duo) to log into the MyResNet portal. You will then be prompted to create/manage your Wi-Fi password. This password is not your University Computing Account password – you will create a separate Wi-Fi password in the portal.
- Which Wi-Fi network name (SSID) should I use? After account setup, connect your device to MyResNet-5G (the standard 5 GHz network) for fast speeds and simplicity. Newer devices (Wi-Fi 6E compatible) can use MyResNet-6G for even higher performance, but you must first disable any “Private Address” (MAC randomization) feature on your device and manually register its MAC address in the portal. Only if a device cannot use 5 GHz (e.g. very old hardware) should you connect to MyResNet-2G (legacy 2.4 GHz). The “MyResNet Start Here” network is only for initial setup and should be forgotten after you finish.
- What speeds and performance do I get? MyResNet guarantees fast service: current Pitt specs are about 140 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload per device. Because each student has dedicated bandwidth, you should enjoy reliable streaming, gaming, and browsing even with multiple devices active.
- How many devices can I register? Up to 12 devices per student can be registered and used simultaneously on MyResNet. You can manage these devices (add/remove) in the portal under “My Devices.”
- Do I have to log in every time? No – once your devices are registered, they will auto-join MyResNet without re-entering credentials. After initial setup, MyResNet works like a home Wi-Fi network: your devices connect automatically with the saved password.
- What is the Personal Area Network (PAN)? MyResNet automatically creates a PAN for each student. This lets your smart devices (speakers, light bulbs, printers, etc.) communicate directly with each other. No special action is needed – any device you connect using your unique Wi-Fi password is added to your PAN.
- Can visiting guests use MyResNet? Yes. Guests should visit the MyResNet portal (Boldyn Networks) and click Guests and Visitors to request temporary access. (Note: Guest accounts cannot use the MyResNet-6G network.)
- What if I forget my MyResNet Wi-Fi password? Log into the MyResNet portal at Boldyn Networks with your Pitt credentials and go to “Show Wi-Fi Password” or “My Devices”. This will display (or allow you to reset) your current Wi-Fi password. You can then change it as needed.
- My device won’t connect. What should I check? First, ensure you’re on the correct SSID (5G vs 6G vs 2G as applicable). For MyResNet-6G connections, make sure you’ve turned off any Private MAC Address/Randomization on the device and that the device’s MAC address is registered in your portal account. If an older device can’t join 5GHz networks, switch it to MyResNet-2G. If problems persist (e.g. slow speeds or drops), try forgetting the network on your device and reconnecting with the right password. You can also check Pitt IT’s Wi-Fi coverage maps or the MyResNet status page for outages.
- What if I have issues during setup? Make sure you followed all setup steps: accepted terms, copied the default password, and changed it in the portal. If your account creation didn’t complete or you have any login trouble, contact support (see below). University IT staff cannot fix Boldyn portal issues on your behalf, so for portal or registration problems use Boldyn’s support channels.
- How secure is MyResNet? MyResNet uses strong Wi-Fi encryption (WPA2/WPA3) and each student has a private, unique password. You create and manage this password in the Boldyn portal; it must be different from your Pitt Passport password. The portal itself uses Pitt’s multi-factor login (Pitt Passport + Duo) for extra security. Do not share your Wi-Fi password with others.
- Is my personal data protected? Your traffic on MyResNet is encrypted from device to access point. The Personal Area Network (PAN) separates your devices into your own group so other users on the hall network cannot see your traffic. However, all users must still follow University IT policies and Boldyn’s terms of use. (By using MyResNet you agree to Pitt’s acceptable-use policies and Boldyn’s end-user agreement.)
- What about guests or streaming devices? Guest devices use a separate guest account (they cannot see your PAN). Streaming sticks, game consoles, etc. must be registered in your MyResNet account before connecting. Once added in the portal, they become part of your PAN and use your Wi-Fi password.
- Who do I contact for help? For any issues or questions, you can reach Pitt’s 24/7 Technology Help Desk at 412‑624‑HELP (4357) or email helpdesk@pitt.edu. The Help Desk can assist with network outages, billing, and general IT support. You can also use the live chat on Boldyn Networks or email support@myresnet.com for MyResNet-specific help. Boldyn’s support team is available 24/7 at 1‑855‑813‑7010.
- Where can I find written guides? Pitt IT’s Knowledge Base has detailed guides and FAQs (e.g. “Getting Started with MyResNet” and “MyResNet FAQs” on services.pitt.edu). You can also visit the MyResNet portal (pitt.apogee.us) and click “Get Support” for how-to articles.
- Any other resources? If you prefer in-person help, stop by one of the campus IT support centers (see technology.pitt.edu for locations). Follow @UPittIT on social media for updates. Remember that Boldyn (the company behind MyResNet) provides the infrastructure and portal.
