I can't sign in to Claude — what do these errors mean?

Introduction

Most Claude for Education sign-in errors mean one of three things: you haven't claimed Claude yet, your claim hasn't finished processing, or your University account status has recently changed. You can fix most of these yourself in a few minutes. Find the message you're seeing below and follow the steps for that error.

Information

Who can use Claude for Education

Claude for Education is available to current University of Pittsburgh students, faculty, and staff who sign in with their Pitt account.

Sponsored accounts can be granted access upon request, alumni accounts cannot gain access at all they need to be converted to sponsored in order to be granted access for data retrieval purposes, UPMC affiliated users can get access if they have a Pitt sponsored account.  Anyone with a primary account (who is not an inactive student) should be able to login.

Students need to be registered for classes in the current or upcoming term. If you're between terms and not yet registered, you won't be able to sign in until your registration processes.

Before you start

Always sign in to Claude with Continue with SSO, using your Pitt email address. Signing in with Continue with Google, or with an email and password, takes you to a personal Claude account, not the University's.

Find your error

"AADSTS50105: Your administrator has configured the application Claude to block users unless they are specifically granted access"

What it means: You haven't claimed Claude yet, so your Pitt account isn't connected to the University's Claude organization.

How to fix it:

  1. Go to Microsoft My Apps and sign in with your Pitt account.
  2. Select Add apps on the right side of the screen, then choose Request new apps.
  3. Search for Claude. If it doesn't show up, try again in a private or incognito browser window.
  4. Select Add.
  5. If you're asked for a business justification, one short sentence is enough, such as "I need Claude for my coursework" or "I use Claude for my research."
  6. Wait about 2 hours for your access to process. Then sign in again at claude.ai with Continue with SSO.

You can also start this request from the Claude for Education service page.

"You haven't been added to your organization yet"

What it means: Your claim went through, but it hasn't finished syncing to Claude yet.

How to fix it:

  1. If you claimed Claude less than 2 hours ago, wait and try again later.
  2. Sign out of claude.ai completely. Then sign back in using Continue with SSO with your Pitt email.
  3. Try a private or incognito browser window to rule out an old saved sign-in.

If it has been more than 2 hours since your claim and you still see this message, contact the IT Help Desk.

"Your sign-in was successful but you don't have permission to access this resource" (Error Code: 53003)

What it means: The University's sign-in system recognized you, but your account doesn't currently meet the requirements for Claude. The error details often show Device state: Unregistered. That line is a symptom; your device usually isn't the cause.

Common reasons:

  • You recently graduated, or your account changed to alumni status. See "If your Pitt status recently changed" below.
  • You're a student who isn't registered for the current or upcoming term. Access usually returns once your registration processes.
  • Your sponsored account recently expired or was renewed. Changes to your account status can take time to sync. Wait a few hours and try again.

How to fix it:

  1. Confirm that your Pitt account is active and your enrollment or employment status is current.
  2. If your status changed recently, wait a few hours, then try again.
  3. Try signing in from a different device or browser.

If none of these apply to you, contact the IT Help Desk. Include the full error details, especially the Request ID and Timestamp.

"Your account has been suspended" or "You no longer have access"

What it means: Your access was removed, usually because your University status changed. See the next section.

If your Pitt status recently changed (graduation, leaving the University, or sponsorship ending)

When your affiliation with the University ends, your access to Claude for Education ends too.

If you want to keep your conversations, export them before your status changes. In Claude, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Export data.

You may need to download files individually. It is best practice to not use Claude as the only storage location for your projects.

If you've already lost access and need to retrieve your data, contact the IT Help Desk.

If you also have a personal Claude account using your Pitt email

If you created a personal Claude account (free or paid) with your Pitt email address before joining the University's organization, the two accounts can conflict. You may lose access to your personal account or its subscription.
