Physical features include:

  • Orientation mark (small blue circle)
  • Up and Down action buttons, and a center button
  • 4x charging indicator LEDs
  • Detachable tether
  • Rear magnetic charging dock point
  • Rear tether release button

Charging

  • The device charges using an included proprietary reversible magnetic dock.
  • Place the transducer on the dock in either orientation to charge the device.
  • When charging, the indicator on the front of the device will flash, corresponding to <25%, 25-50%, 50-75%, and 75-100% charged.
  • When fully charged and on the dock, all 4 indicator LEDs will be solid.
  • The device takes approx 90 minutes to fully charge. You may get up to 2 hours of runtime from a single charge.

Probe Buttons

The center button on the probe can be used for a variety of uses, including:

  • Capture a still
  • Start/stop recording
  • Unfreeze an image

The up and down buttons are configurable based on your needs. To customize them:

  1. In the Butterfly iQ app, select your avatar on the bottom right of the toolbar.
  2. Select Preferences, then select Probe Button Actions
  3. From here, you can configure Up and Down Button Action to one of the following:
    • Adjust Depth
    • Adjust Gain
    • Change Mode

Cable Insertion/Removal

The kit includes two separate types of cables to be compatible with multiple generations of iPads. To swap them out:

  1. Remove the existing cable (if any) from the probe by pressing the release button on the back of the probe, and pull the cable out with your other hand.
  2. Align the new cable with the bottom of the probe. The cable is keyed to only go in one way.
  3. Push cable firmly into the probe. When inserted properly, there will be a small gap between the strain relief section and the probe, and an audible click will be heard.

Cleaning

Use the included disinfectant wipes to sterilize the device and remove any gel. This is recommended after every use of the probe. Additionally, all probes are disinfected utilizing a 5-minute UV light bath prior to lending.

  1. Disconnect the probe from the iPad
  2. Wipe the probe, cable, and connector down for 60 seconds until visibly clean.
  3. Get a new wipe and repeat (2) if 60 seconds is insufficient to clean.
  4. To dry, use a soft cloth and pat the lens. Do not wipe the lens. Wipe the remaining portions of the equipment dry.
  5. Visually inspect the probe in a well-lit environment. If still dirty, repeat steps 1-4.

CAUTION: Ultrasound gel is electrically conductive, and can damage hardware if left on plugs and contact pads, or in charge ports. Please check these areas thoroughly before returning the device, or you may be liable for damage.

Basic Troubleshooting

Charging Issues

  1. Verify charger is working by utilizing any device with wireless charging capability (Android, iPhone, smart watch, etc.)
  2. After verifying the charger works as intended, place the probe on the charger and wait 5 minutes.
  3. After 5 minutes, hold the up and down buttons simultaneously until the LEDs flash, indicating a reset.
  4. Leave the probe on the charger for at least 6 more hours.
  5. Reset the probe again by holding the up and down buttons again until the LEDs flash
  6. Reconnect to iPad

Image Issues

  1. Switch to another preset for a few moments, and return to the original preset. This will reset the image parameters.
  2. Make sure you are using the appropriate preset and depth for the anatomy being imaged
  3. Make sure the screen brightness is set to at least 65%
  4. Make sure you are using enough ultrasound gel

If, after following the steps above, the probe is still inoperable, please notify us at ETLSupport@pitt.edu, so we may investigate further, or get a replacement.
