Stale Request Error When Logging In with Pitt Passport
What is the error?
A "Stale Request" error appears when your login session is no longer valid. Pitt Passport uses Shibboleth single sign-on, which expects each login step to happen in order within one browser session. If that sequence is interrupted, the system shows this page instead of letting you continue.

Common causes
- Using the Back button after signing in or while on the login page
- Bookmarking the Pitt Passport login page instead of the application you want to reach
- Following a saved or shared link that points to the login form
- Leaving a login page open for a long time before signing in
- Having several tabs or windows open to Pitt Passport at once
- Old cookies or cached session data in your browser
- Switching networks mid-login, such as moving from Wi-Fi to cellular
How to fix it
- Close the error page and close all open Pitt Passport and application tabs or windows.
- Open a new browser window.
- Go directly to the application you want to use from its official address or from my.pitt.edu or services.pitt.edu.
- Sign in again when prompted.
It may take more than one attempt, since the first try after an error can fail.
If the error continues
- Clear your browser cache and cookies, then restart the browser.
- Try a different browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
- Try a private or incognito window to rule out saved data or extensions.
- Confirm that cookies are allowed. In Safari, check Settings, then Privacy.
- Remove any saved login pages from your bookmarks, password manager, or app settings.
- Restart your device.
- Try a different network, such as switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
How to avoid it
- Bookmark the application, not the login page.
- Do not use the Back button during or after sign in.
- Start a fresh browser session each day.
- Avoid opening several sign-in tabs at once.
- Use email links only for their intended one-time purpose.
