How to Choose a Computer
Use these tips to decide what fits your needs and budget. For definitions of any component mentioned here, see Computer Parts Explained below.

Check Department Requirements:
- Some university departments have specific requirements or recommendations for computer specifications. Check with your department IT to make sure you meet any specific criteria. You can also contact us with questions about any of the components on this page. We can provide general guidance!

Determine Your Needs:
- Identify the purpose of your computer. Different majors and academic requirements may call for specific features. For example, an engineering student might need a powerful processor for simulations, while an art student might prioritize a high-quality graphics card for design work.

Use a Current Operating System:
- Choose a computer with the latest operating system so it keeps receiving security updates. New Windows computers should come with Windows 11 (Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 in October 2025), and new Macs come with the current version of macOS. Whichever you choose, keep the operating system updated after purchase.

Consider Portability:
- Decide whether you need a laptop for portability or whether a desktop would better suit your needs. Laptops are versatile and suitable for studying on the go, while desktops often offer more power at a lower cost.

- If you are considering a laptop, check the battery life. Longer battery life helps when attending lectures, studying in libraries, or working where power outlets are not readily available.

- Choose a processor that suits your needs. For general university tasks, a mid-range processor is usually sufficient. For resource-intensive activities such as video editing, programming, or 3D modeling, consider a more powerful CPU.

Check RAM and Storage Capacity:
- Make sure the computer has enough RAM for smooth multitasking, and enough storage for your files. We recommend 16GB of RAM for most programs of study and 32GB for more intensive programs (AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Cloud, programming, or local AI tools). A solid state drive (SSD) also significantly improves overall responsiveness.

Understand AI PCs and NPUs:
- Many new laptops are now sold as "AI PCs" or "Copilot+ PCs," meaning they include a Neural Processing Unit (NPU): a chip that speeds up on-device AI tasks. This can genuinely help with things like live captions, background noise removal and camera effects on video calls, and AI features built into apps such as the Microsoft 365 and Adobe suites. An NPU is not a substitute for a good processor, enough RAM, or a dedicated graphics card, and it does not improve gaming performance. Treat it as a useful bonus on an otherwise well-configured machine, not a reason to overspend or to accept a worse screen, less memory, or weaker build quality.

Graphics Performance (for Design and Engineering):
- If your academic work involves graphics-intensive tasks such as graphic design, video editing, or CAD, invest in a computer with a dedicated graphics card (GPU).

Connectivity Options:
- Make sure the computer has the ports you need for peripherals (external drives, printers, and so on) and connectivity options such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Also look for modern USB-C or Thunderbolt ports, which many laptops now use for charging, video output, and single-cable docking to a monitor.

- Choose a computer with some degree of upgradability, especially on a tight budget. Upgrading components like RAM or storage later can extend the life of your device.

- Research different models, read reviews from reliable sources, and compare prices from various retailers to find the best value for your budget. Usually you can find the model number of the computer, then plug that into YouTube to watch reviews!
- Note: As of late 2025 and into 2026, RAM and SSD prices have risen sharply because of high demand from AI data centers, so computer prices may be higher than usual. It is worth comparing carefully and, where you can, buying the memory and storage you need up front.

- Check the warranty offered by the manufacturer, and consider the availability of customer support and service centers near you. A good warranty and reliable support can be crucial for the longevity of your device.
Computer Parts Explained

Operating System (OS)
Function: The operating system (OS) is the software foundation of the computer. It manages the hardware and other software so they work together, providing a user interface, managing files, and controlling the computer's resources.
University Use: It lets you run applications, access files, and use the computer efficiently. Common OS options include Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Note: New Apple silicon iMac and MacBook models (the M-series processors, such as the current M4 and M5 chips) cannot run Windows natively. For any program that is Windows-only, a Mac would not be ideal, though we do offer the Virtual Lab as a workaround, which can be accessed through a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
Processor (CPU)
Function: The central processing unit (CPU) is the computer's brain, performing calculations and executing instructions. It is responsible for the speed and overall performance of the computer.
University Use: It is crucial for running complex applications, simulations, and multitasking. In a university setting, it ensures smooth operation of research software and academic tools.
Memory (RAM)
Function: Random access memory (RAM) is like short-term memory. It stores data the CPU is currently using or will use soon, allowing quick access and retrieval.
University Use: RAM lets multiple applications run at the same time without slowing the system down, which is vital for projects, software, and multitasking.
Recommended:
- Standard programs of study: 16GB
- More intensive programs (AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Cloud, programming, or local AI tools): 32GB
Storage (SSD or Hard Disk Drive)
Function: Storage holds your data permanently, including the operating system, software, documents, and files. A solid state drive (SSD) is faster than a traditional hard disk drive (HDD) and is now standard in most laptops.
University Use: It provides long-term storage for research data, projects, and personal files.
Note: Most modern laptops ship with an SSD, and their read and write speeds are faster than a hard disk drive (HDD).
Graphics Card (GPU)
Function: The graphics processing unit (GPU) renders graphics and performs parallel processing tasks. It is important for high-quality visuals and complex calculations.
University Use: It is essential for graphics-intensive tasks such as computer-aided design (CAD), video editing, and simulations in fields like engineering, architecture, and multimedia.
Note: Most CPUs include integrated graphics, but for programs like CAD, video editing, and simulations a dedicated GPU is best.
Screen Size
Function: Screen size is the physical dimension of the display. A larger screen provides more visual space.
University Use: Larger screens help with multitasking, research, and viewing detailed documents or presentations, and are especially useful for detailed data analysis.
Camera
Function: The camera captures images or video for video conferencing, recording lectures, and taking photos.
University Use: Cameras support virtual classes, video meetings, and recording academic events.
Note: Most modern laptops have a built-in camera.
Microphone
Function: The microphone records audio for voice communication and audio recording.

Networking Card

Note: Most modern laptops have a built-in network card, but may lack the port needed for a wired Ethernet connection.
