What Should I Do if I Spot a Computer Security Incident (Virus, Hacking, etc.)?

Overview

Promptly reporting suspected incidents is crucial. It allows the University to quickly assess the situation, contain any issues, ensure other computers remain unaffected, and determine if sensitive information is at risk.

 

Detail

To report an incident, create a ticket or contact the Technology Help Desk at 412-624-HELP (4357) immediately if you encounter:

  • A virus, spyware, or other malicious programs on your computer.
  • Attempts to break into your computer over the network.
  • Unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information stored on your computer.
  • Malicious attachments or links you have opened.
  • Contact from a social engineering scammer attempting to access your device.

When reporting, please provide the following information:

  • What you have observed.
  • Whether the situation may involve more than one computer.
  • The date and time the incident occurred.
  • The name, serial number, and IP network address of the computer (if known).
  • The location of the computer.
  • Whether any potentially sensitive information is stored on the computer.
