Gemini leverages advanced generative AI from Google’s Gemini 3 model family to deliver a versatile, multimodal experience across web and mobile platforms. This enables you to perform a wide range of generative tasks—from writing and planning to deep multi-step research and creative projects—while seamlessly integrating with Google’s ecosystem of tools and services.
Usage Limits
The University supplies the license tier “Gemini Apps as a core service with Education Fundamentals”. The tier “Gemini Apps as a core service with Google AI Pro for Education” is not available. Please see the following link for usage limits.

Access
Google Gemini is available for all Students, Faculty, and Staff at the University of Pittsburgh. To access the tool, visit https://gemini.google.com. If you are currently logged in to the Pitt Passport system you will be authenticated automatically. If you are prompted for your Work or School account, provide your University credentials.
To ensure that you're logged in with your Pitt account, you can click the profile bubble on the top right and it should list your Pitt email address and say "Managed by pitt.edu":
Tip: if you log into Google Chrome with your personal account, you can open Gemini in an Incognito Window to log in with your Pitt account without having to log out of your personal account!

Security and privacy are core considerations when using AI tools. Google Gemini provides transparency and control over your data. For Pitt users, when using Gemini your data is protected under the University’s Workspace agreement and is not used to train public AI models. You can manage your activity, review past chats, and adjust privacy settings directly within the app. While Gemini is powerful, it’s important to verify its responses, especially for sensitive topics.
Google Gemini also provides a tool called Gems, which are customizable versions of Gemini that you can create to tailor the AI's behavior, personality, and responses to your specific needs and tasks.
API access to Gemini in the private Pitt tenant is not currently available but is is being developed as of February 2026 and will be available soon. Pitt data should not be submitted to the public version of Gemini through the web interface or API.
