Gmail App: Unable to Access Pitt Email on Android

Overview

Some Android users are currently experiencing an issue where the Gmail app cannot connect to their Pitt email account. Individuals affected by the issue see an error message when attempting to use the Gmail app with their Pitt Email such as:

"Check your account info and try again, or switch to modern auth below. To get help, contact your IT admin."

The vendor is aware of the issue, which affects customers beyond the University of Pittsburgh. As a workaround, individuals can use the Microsoft Outlook app to access their Pitt Email on Android devices. Pitt Email can also be accessed through a web browser by logging in to myPitt (my.pitt.edu) and selecting Pitt Email.

Recommended Workaround

Until this issue is resolved, the recommended workaround is to use the Microsoft Outlook app to access your Pitt email on Android.

  1. Download the Microsoft Outlook app from the Google Play Store if you don't already have it installed.
  2. Open Outlook and tap Add Account.
  3. Enter your University of Pittsburgh email address and follow the sign-in prompts.
  4. Complete any multi-factor authentication steps as prompted (e.g., Duo).
  5. Once signed in, your email, calendar, and contacts will be available in Outlook.

You can also access your work email from any browser by visiting outlook.office.com and signing in with your Pitt credentials.
