Overview
Outlook Classic may disable the Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office after it detects a slow load or a crash. Once disabled, Outlook often keeps it disabled, and the New Teams Meeting button disappears from the Calendar ribbon.
Symptoms
- The Teams Meeting button is missing from the Outlook Calendar ribbon or the meeting invite window.
- The Teams Meeting Add-in is unchecked or greyed out under COM Add-ins.
- The add-in re-disables itself after Outlook is restarted.
Applies To
- Outlook Classic (Microsoft 365 Apps / Office 16.0)
- Windows 10 and Windows 11
Section 1: Re-enable from Disabled Items
- In Outlook, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to Disabled Items and click Go.
- If Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office is listed, select it and click Enable.
- Close and reopen Outlook.
Section 2: Re-enable from COM Add-ins
- Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- Set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Check the box next to Microsoft Teams Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office and click OK.
- Close and reopen Outlook.
If the box is greyed out, or the add-in unchecks itself after restart, continue to Section 3.
Section 3: Clear Outlook's Resiliency Flags (Registry)
Technician-level step. Back up the registry or export the keys before making changes.
- Close Outlook completely (confirm that
OUTLOOK.EXE is not running in Task Manager).
- Open
regedit.
- Go to the following key and delete any values listed in it:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Resiliency\DisabledItems
- Go to the following key and confirm that the LoadBehavior value (DWORD) is set to 3:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\TeamsAddin.FastConnect
- Check whether a policy is forcing the add-in off:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Resiliency\AddinList
If TeamsAddin.FastConnect is present and set to 0, the add-in is being disabled by Group Policy or Intune. Escalate to the team that manages those policies.
- Reopen Outlook and verify the add-in.
Section 4: Re-register the Add-in
Technician-level step. Requires an elevated command prompt.
- Close Outlook and Teams.
- Browse to the add-in folder (the version number will vary; use
x86 instead of x64 on 32-bit Office):
%localappdata%\Microsoft\TeamsMeetingAddin\<version>\x64
- Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
regsvr32 /n /i:user "<path>\Microsoft.Teams.AddinLoader.dll"
- Reopen Outlook and verify the add-in.
Section 5: Reinstall Teams
The Teams Meeting Add-in is installed by Teams, not by Office. If the folder in Section 4 does not exist, reinstall Teams.
- Fully quit Teams (right-click the tray icon > Quit).
- Uninstall Teams from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Reinstall Teams and sign in at least once.
- Launch Outlook after Teams has signed in, and verify the add-in.
Additional Checks
- Elevation mismatch: Outlook and Teams must both run as a normal user. If either is running as administrator, the add-in will not load.
- Outdated Office build: Older builds had a known bug that caused this behavior. Update via File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Managed environment: Group Policy or Intune may block or force-disable add-ins. See the
AddinList key in Section 3.
Escalation
If the add-in is still disabled after completing all sections, collect the following and escalate to Operations
