Understanding Certificate Upgrades and Connecting to WIRELESS-PITTNET

Overview

We are constantly working to enhance our PittNet Wi-Fi service. Due to past upgrades of the certificates that are used to connect to our network, you may need to take additional steps to connect. Some devices will reconnect without any issue.

Take These Steps if You Have Trouble Connecting

To ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted network service, please refer to the steps below.  

PittNet Wi-Fi: From a Phone or Tablet

Some phones and tablets will reconnect to PittNet Wi-Fi without your having to take any action at all. On other devices, a pop-up message similar to the one shown below may prompt you to trust or install a new certificate. If a prompt similar to the one shown below appears, trust the certificate. You should then be able to connect to PittNet Wi-Fi.

If you do not receive a prompt and have trouble connecting to PittNet Wi-Fi, complete these steps:

  1. Delete or forget Wireless PittNet from your list of known networks.
  2. Re-connect to Wireless PittNet.

PittNet Wi-Fi: From Windows

Some computers will reconnect to PittNet Wi-Fi without your having to take any action at all. On other computers, a pop-up message similar to the one shown below may prompt you to connect. If a prompt similar to the one shown below appears, simply click Connect.

PittNet Wi-Fi: From macOS

  1. Open the Settings app on your Mac
  2. Navigate to the Wifi section, then look under Saved Networks for WIRELESS-PITTNET
  3. Click the 3 dots next to the entry, then "Forget This Network"
  4. Click the search icon in the top bar of your Mac, or press the Command and Space keys together on your keyboard to open Spotlight Search
  5. Search for Keychain Access, and press Enter or Return to open the application
  6. In the Keychain Access application, click the "login" option in the top left, then scroll through the list and look for any blue certificate options named "ias.cssd.pitt.edu"
  7. Select each entry, and right-click (two fingers on the trackpad, or command + click) to show the options. 
  8. Delete each entry, and enter your password to confirm if prompted. This will fully remove your saved certificate and allow you to re-connect.

Network Ports in Classrooms or Public Locations

Staff or faculty planning to connect to public ports in classrooms or conference rooms should install the appropriate InComon Certificates. Complete these steps before connecting your computer to the network port: 

  1. Log in to the Software Download Service via myPitt (my.pitt.edu) and search for Wired Network.
  2. Select the InCommon Certificates option for your operating system (Mac or Windows), then read and follow the on-screen instructions to download and install.

If you are not able to automatically connect

If you are unable to automatically connect your computer to PittNet Wi-Fi or Wired, connect manually using the Help/How To instructions specific to your system.
