Overview
Proctorio is a secure, web-based proctoring platform that does not require a live proctor or advanced scheduling. Recorded proctoring data is only viewable by course faculty members via Canvas. Proctorio should not be used for quizzes, just larger exams such as unit exams, midterms, and finals.
Installing Proctorio
• The Proctorio extension will only work in the Google Chrome browser.
• Faculty should install the Proctorio extension as soon as their live course shell is ready for the term.
• Proctorio exam profiles must be set up before any student attempts the exam, otherwise the settings will be locked in place.
Profile Setting Recommendations
Important notes:
- University Provost guidelines prohibit the use of audio recording and room camera panning when using virtual Proctoring services. These features must be disabled.
- Open resources examinations are more likely to trigger “false flags” due to student movement (particularly looking up and down at notes). Proctorio is NOT recommended for open-book assessments, but the lenient profile can be used if absolutely necessary.
Your instructional designer can create your exam profiles for you during term prep, or you can create your own exam profiles. Once you create a profile for one exam, you can save it and apply it to other exams in your course.
Please note, profiles cannot be shared between faculty. Only one faculty member should create and apply the profiles. All faculty will be able to view the Proctorio gradebook regardless of who sets up the profiles.
The following profile settings are recommended for high-stakes closed-book examinations.
High-Stakes (closed-book assessments)

Other Tools
Proctorio also provides a virtual whiteboard and a calculator for use during the exam. These features can be toggled on/off in the exam profile.
Lessons Learned
-
Technical Support
-
Proctorio support should be the student’s immediate line of contact if a technical issue occurs during an active exam. Re-entry with agent must be turned on in the settings for Proctorio support to work.
-
Live chat support is available 24/7. Students can access support using the Proctorio plugin as shown below.

-
Exam Passcode
-
Proctorio automatically assigns a randomized passcode to the exam.
-
Once activated, faculty should not deactivate the passcode or provide the student with the passcode for any reason! Disabling the passcode overrides Proctorio and disconnects it from the exam.
-
If a student reports that a passcode is needed, this means that they are using the wrong browser, or that they have not installed Proctorio correctly.
-
Exam Timeout
-
Canvas’ timer continues to run even if the student exits the examination page. Exam time extensions can only be added by the instructor if time is remaining.
-
It is imperative that the student contacts support ASAP to ensure the exam does not time out. In the event of exam timeout, Proctorio support agents are unable to provide re-entry into the exam.
-
Suspicion Flags
-
Student movement can sometimes trigger “false flags” for suspicious activity in the proctoring system. Faculty will be able to see the exact timestamp in which the flagged movement occurred in the recording as high (red), medium (yellow/orange), or low (green) suspicion.
-
A department policy is recommended for escalation of suspicion flags if needed.
